Yak in the Alps

©1998 Manuel Bauer / Lookat
This is a story about a forest ranger, living and working in the Swiss Alps, whose life changed following a holiday trip to Tibet; where setting his eyes upon aYak, an animal native to the high altitude Tibetan pasteurs and which one can only describe as a cross between a mammoth and a buffalo, he decided to introduce this same animal to the Swiss Alps.

Leaving his stable job as a ranger, Daniel Wismer decided there and then to set up the first Yak farm in Switzerland using ‘Tibetan Yaks’.

Since 1998, he and his 27 yaks, have been revitalising the abandoned alp of "Roti Flüe" in Emdb,Valais. At 1600m above sea level, Emdb, is said to be the steepest situated village in Europe. Wismer, with the help of numerous Tibetan friends, has also started a trekking holiday programme, using the same Yak to carry the supplies, a venture which is attracting many visitors.
